The winter weather this weekend caused travel problems during the busiest time of year. On Sunday, more than 10,000 flights were delayed nationwide, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. On Monday, the disruption was less severe, with around 800 cancellations in the U.S., according to the site.
On New Year's Day, the lake effect snow will continue off of lakes Erie and Ontario. That new snow could bring the total snowfall to 1 to 3 feet in places like Orchard Park in upstate New York. In the West, the rain will become more widespread, falling all day on Thursday in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Portland and Seattle.

A potent winter storm brought blizzard conditions, treacherous travel and power outages in parts of the Upper Midwest on Monday as other areas of the country experienced plunging temperatures, strong winds and a mix of snow,
